Disk Operating System (DOS) is a command-line interface (CLI) operating system, users must enter commands in order to communicate with it. Microsoft's MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), which was created and introduced in 1981, is the most well-known DOS-based operating system. DOS stands for Disk Operating System . It is an operating system that was widely used in the 1980s and early 1990s, especially in its popular version, MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). DOS allows users to interact with the computer through text commands typed on a command line. MS- DOS dominated the IBM PC compatible market between 1981 and 1995. Although the name has come to be identified specifically with MS- DOS and compatible operating systems, DOS is a platform-independent acronym for disk operating system, [2] whose use predates the IBM PC. MS- DOS was originally written by Tim Paterson and introduced by Microsoft in August 1981 and was last updated in 1994 when MS- DOS 6.22 was released. MS- DOS allows users to navigate, open, and otherwise manipulate files on their computer from a command line instead of a GUI (Graphical User Interface) like Windows.
