Chechnya is landlocked Muslim territory in southern Russia on the north side of the Caucasus Mountains about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) south of Moscow. Home to about 1.4 million people, most of them ethnic Chechens, it is separated from the west side of Caspian Sea by the Dagestan. Amid rampant speculation about his health, Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-allied strongman who rules the region, has been noticeably absent from view, while grooming his teenage son for the future. Chechnya still has a way to go when it comes to inviting tourism in significant numbers, but it is preparing.
