What is fragile X syndrome? Fragile X syndrome is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability in males and is also a significant cause of intellectual disability in females. It affects about 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females and occurs in all racial and ethnic groups. Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is one of the most common causes of inherited intellectual disability. Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited, single-gene cause of intellectual disability and autism worldwide. It can cause intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism, speech delay. It can be diagnosed by a DNA blood test and it is estimated that 5% of people with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum disorder also have Fragile X Syndrome.
