In 1932, its unification complete, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was proclaimed and its flag made official. The early version had the script filling most of the green field, and the sabre was curved. The flag of Saudi Arabia, since the reign of Imam Muhammad bin Saud, the founder of the first Saudi state, was green and made of wool and ibrisam (generally known to be the finest silk thread) with the shahada written on it. Imam Turki bin Abdullah also took it as the national flag during his efforts to unify the second Saudi state. The flag of Saudi Arabia is never flown at half-mast as a sign of respect towards the holiness of the shahada, the sacred creed depicted on the flag. Because the shahada is considered holy, the flag is not normally used on T-shirts or other items.
