Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan (February 4, 1917 – August 10, 1980) was the President of Pakistan from 1969 to 1971, following the resignation of Ayub Khan who has promoted him rapidly through the ranks of the army and hand-picked him as his successor. Yahya (pronounced Ya-hee-uh) Khan claims direct descent from warrior nobles who fought in the elite armies of Nader Shah, the Persian adventurer who conquered Delhi in the 18th century. General Yahya Khan belonged to the British-Indian Military that procured the accent and habits of the British, but unlike his fellows in both India and Pakistan, he wasn’t a deep thinker or reader. Rather he was a man of deeds. General Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan served as the 3rd President of Pakistan and became the country’s second military ruler. His rule from 1969 to 1971 faced political unrest, the breakup of Pakistan, and the emergence of Bangladesh.
